As the wise Buddha said, "What we think, we become."
Did you know that your brain produces as many as 12,000 to 50,000 thoughts per day, dependent on how deep your thought processes are?
I have always believed that I have a very overactive thought process, so I find this piece of information intriguing. Others actually do as much thought work as I do!
Have you every examined your thoughts? Do you ever wonder how many of them are empowering?
I sometimes ask my clients to keep a thought journal, so they can reflect on their thinking throughout a day. They do this as a way of becoming familiar with the repetitive thoughts they have and get to examine how well their thoughts are supporting them. It's a really interesting exercise, you should try it. At Tiny Buddha you can find a great article on 10 Journalling Tips to Help You Heal, Grow and Thrive.
It is amazing to me that we have this most incredible ability to 'think' and what comes out of our thinking is so influencial in the way we lead our lives, yet most of us are so unfamiliar with our thought processes.
So with this in mind, I delved deep within me to try and explore some of my ideas about thoughts:-
The power of my thoughts is immeasurable
I wonder how many thoughts I have each waking day (now I know!)
How many thoughts do I have whilst I am asleep?
My brain never stops working and producing thoughts
My thoughts are incredible things: they form shapes, tastes and smells
They are created by my past and present experiences
They have textures
Does thinking burn calories, if so I should be skinny!
They can be erratic, they can be slow and they can be repetitive
They replay over an over again, over decades
I am very familiar with some thoughts and not others
I often let my thoughts control my moods
They are sometimes my friend, but often my enemy
I am working hard at controlling my thoughts, even though I know that does not work
I am getting better at replacing negative thoughts with more empowering ones.
Increasing your awareness about your thoughts and how you think, provides valuable self-feedback, which is helpful to examine.
If you are facing a challenge or are unhappy about something, get up close and examine your thoughts. Ask yourself, what other thoughts could I be creating that will support and serve me in a way that could improve this situation.
How would you describe your ideas about your thoughts?
Considering the power of your thoughts, how familiar with them are you?
Here's the thing, if you get to create your thoughts, which you do. You can create whatever thoughts you want..... Be playful, adventurous and tap into how your body feels when you think empowering thoughts vs disempowering thoughts.
